Xerostomia and Sicca Symptoms

No medication alters the natural history of chronic oral and ocular dryness.

  1. Nonpharmacologic therapies are first-line:
    1. Local moistening with water
    2. Sugar-free acidic candies and lozenges
    3. Sugar-free chewing gum (mechanical stimulants)
    4. Saliva substitutes
  2. Medical therapies:
    1. cevilemine (muscarinic agonist) stimulates salivation
    2. pilocarpine (muscarinic agonist) is equally as effective
