Xerostomia and Sicca Symptoms
No medication alters the natural history of chronic oral and ocular dryness.
- Nonpharmacologic therapies are first-line:
- Local moistening with water
- Sugar-free acidic candies and lozenges
- Sugar-free chewing gum (mechanical stimulants)
- Saliva substitutes
- Medical therapies:
- cevilemine (muscarinic agonist) stimulates salivation
- pilocarpine (muscarinic agonist) is equally as effective
